Mr. David Watkins

asked the Secretary of State for Prices and Consumer Protection if she will make an order to keep the present limit below which small silver articles are exempt from hallmarking for a further period beyond 1st January 1975, in view of the risk that the additional work otherwise caused might exceed the assay offices' capacity.

My right hon. Friend intends to make such an order as soon as possible after 1st January 1975, when the relevant provisions of the Hallmarking Act 1973 come into force.
