HC Deb 14 June 1974 vol 874 cc668-9W
Mr. McGuire

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what special payment schemes exist which are designed to encourage doctors to stay in, or move to, areas of special need in England and Wales.

Dr. Owen

Doctors who by moving into a shortage area add to its manpower can be paid an initial practice allowance during the first few years to help them set up in practice. Where an area continues to be short of doctors for some time, all the doctors in the area receive a designated area allowance which is paid at a higher level in the more seriously affected areas.
