HC Deb 14 June 1974 vol 874 cc665-6W
Mr. Redmond

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what amount of Government money has been allocated to dental research in each of the past five years; and what plans exist to increase this research work in the near future.

Dr. Owen

It is not possible to provide overall figures for Government expenditure on dental research. Expenditure by my Department in the five years was as follows:

1969–70 £23,000
1970–71 £56,400
1971–72 £120,800
1972–73 £115,000
1973–74 £114,200

More basic research in this field, however, is carried on by the Medical Research Council, in various of its establishments and under grant, and by university departments and dental schools. Applied dental research is also carried out in National Health Service hospitals. Details of expenditure requested could not however be readily obtained from the records of the authorities concerned.
