Mr. Michael Latham

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment whether he will define the general responsibilities which he has allocated to each of the Ministers and Under-Secretaries of State in his Department.

Mr. Crosland

I am responsible for all the work of my Department. Other Ministerial responsibilities in the Department at present can be summarized as follows:

The Minister for Transport deals with roads and transportation, nationalized transport, and road safety. He is sup' ported by the Under-Secretary of State, my hon. Friend the Member for Glasgow, Kelvingrove (Mr. Carmichael).

The Minister for Planning and Local Government deals with land use and regional planning, land policy, new towns, and local government matters. He is supported by the Under-Secretary of State, my hon. Friend the Member for Widens (Mr. Oakes).

The Minister for Housing and Construction deals with housing and construction industry matters, and the Property Services Agency. He is supported by the Under-Secretary of State, my hon. Friend the Member for Manchester, Ardwick (Mr. Kaufman).

As Ministers of State my hon. Friend the Member for Birmingham, Small Heath (Mr. Howell) deals with sport, pollution policy and countryside matters, while my hon. Friend the Member for Manchester, Open Shaw (Mr. Morris) deals with urban affairs generally, ancient monuments and historic buildings, and conservation.

The Lord Privy Seal and Lord Garn worthy are the Department's spokesmen in another place.
