HC Deb 12 June 1974 vol 874 cc549-50W
42. Mr. Costain

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment if he is aware of the dangers to which pedestrians are subjected because of the traffic con gestion in the High Street at Hythe; and whether he will investigate the possibility of providing pedestrian crossing to help shoppers, especially those with young children or babies in prams, to cross the road with greater safety.

Mr. Mulley

The proposed removal of through traffic is the best way of solving pedestrian problems in Hythe High Street. Meanwhile I am looking into the possibility of short-term measures though I doubt whether pedestrian crossings are the answer in this case.
