HC Deb 12 June 1974 vol 874 cc586-7W
Mr. Moonman

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services how far advanced Essex County Council is in the completion of its survey of the handicapped.

Dr. Owen

Following a sample survey covering 6,000 households carried out in 1972, I am advised that voluntary organizations are conducting door-to-door surveys in selected areas of the county on behalf of the local authority. In addition the authority is to circulate a leaflet informing handicapped people of the services available to them throughout the county. The number of physically handicapped people, excluding the blind and the deaf, registered with the former county council increased from 6,961 on 31st March 1972 to 8,974 on 31st March 1974.
