HC Deb 12 June 1974 vol 874 cc572-3W
Mr. Stainton

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science why he is continuing to apply the statutory provisions imposing responsibility for maintenance on parents of female students who marry during their courses of study at universities.

Mr. Gerry Fowler

My right hon. Friend does not regard marriage of the student as sufficient reason for waiving the responsibility of the parents to contribute according to their means to the higher education of their student son or daughter, where that student is not regarded as independent. If a woman student before the start of her course is 25 or over, or has supported herself for at least three years, no parental contribution is expected, whether or not she marries during the course.
