§ Mr. Tomlinsonasked the Secretary of State for the Environment (1) if he will examine the section of the M6 motorway at Water Orton, with a view to providing either screening or noise-resistant barriers;
(2) what studies have been undertaken to determine the economic balance between rerouting the proposed M42 motorway or paying compensation to the villagers of Water Orton because of the noise level they will suffer if the proposed route is developed;
(3) what research has taken, is taking or will be taking place on the effect of noise on Water Orton, Warwickshire, a residential area, which may be surrounded on three sides by motorways if the M42 takes its proposed route.
§ Mr. CarmichaelMy right hon. Friend is considering what steps should be taken528W to ameliorate any adverse effects to Water Orton which might result from the proximity of the M6 and the proposed M42. In connection with this he has directed that a detailed noise survey be carried out, so that the likely benefits accruing from the incorporation of various remedial measures can be assessed.
My right hon. Friend is satisfied that the cost of rerouting the proposed M42 in the Water Orton area would vastly exceed the compensation otherwise payable. There are, however, several other factors which he will consider in examining possible alternative routes for the proposed M42 near Water Orton.
§ Mr. Tomlinsonasked the Secretary of State for the Environment when he expects to decide on the structure plan for the area of Warwickshire which includes Water Orton.
§ Mr. OakesMy right hon. Friend hopes to be able to send his proposed modifications and reservations to the county planning authorities concerned during the summer, with a request for their publication.
§ Mr. Tomlinsonasked the Secretary of State for the Environment what are his plans in relation to confirming land on the periphery of Water Orton as being green belt.
§ Mr. OakesThe proposals announced in August 1973 envisaged that this land would be included in the interim green belt category, where final decisions will normally be taken in the context of structure and local plans. My right hon. Friend is at present considering objections to these 1973 proposals, and he hopes to reach a decision on them shortly.
