HC Deb 10 June 1974 vol 874 cc413-5W
Mr. Molloy

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will direct Inland Revenue tax inspection offices to return tries, respectively, for the last 10 years and for each of those years, together with the resulting profit per employee and per million pounds of capital employed.

Dr. Gilbert

The table below shows the information which is available on the profits, profits per employee and per unit of capital employed, for private industry and the nationalised industries. The profits figures are shown for public corporations, including corporations other than nationalised industries, in order to match the available data for the number of employees. For the same reason, the profit figures for private industry include the income of unincorporated business, including agriculture and commerce. The data available on the rate of return per unit of capital employed are net of depreciation. The figures for nationalised industries are available from their accounts. Comparable figures for private industry are available only from large quoted companies.

all enclosures accompanying correspondence sent them by hon. Members.

Dr. Gilbert

Such enclosures are normally returned, except where, as in the case of vouchers supporting a repayment claim, the tax office needs to retain them. If my hon. Friend will give me details of any case in which he considers enclosures have been wrongly retained, I will immediately look into it.
