§ Mr. Tebbitasked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland (1) if he will ensure that the escorts provided to enable workers to cross picket lines in order to continue working during periods of industrial action by organisations of workers do not prevent pickets from stating their case and seeking to persuade workers to withdraw their labour;
(2) if he will give details of the steps he has taken in furtherance of his policy of giving protection to workers who wish to cross picket lines during industrial action.
Mr. MerlynRees: I assume that the hon. Member has in mind the incidents surrounding the return-to-work marches led by trade union officials during the recent industrial stoppage organised by the Ulster Workers Council and backed by paramilitary forces. In the circumstances which involved violence and intimidation the RUC provided appropriate protection.
