HC Deb 30 July 1974 vol 878 cc164-5W
Mr. Russell Johnston

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what number of schools are still in use in Scotland which were built before 1875.

Mr. William Ross

There is no central record of school buildings still in use by date of construction.

Mr. Russell Johnston

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland which school buildings in Inverness-shire are accepted by him as being unsatisfactory; and what action is being taken.

Mr. William Ross

It is for the education authority to consider which buildings require improvement or replacement, and work is authorised as resources permit. The following projects in Inverness-shire have been accepted by my Department for inclusion in the primary school improvement programme since it began in 1972–73: Carinish Primary School—improvement Broadford Primary School—replacement Central Primary School, Inverness, replacement Shratherrick Primary School—replacement.

In addition there is an element of improvement in some projects that have been included in the main school building programme; and it is open to the education authority to carry out improvements under the minor works programme without reference to my Department.
