Mr. John H. Osborn

asked the Secretary of State for Prices and Consumer Protection what is now the index, or average cost per meal, for eating out in the London area, in the provinces and in the country as a whole, respectively; and how this compares with comparative indices or costs for 1st April 1974, 1973 and 1968.

Information collected for the General Index of Retail Prices shows that in June 1974 the cost of meals in restaurants and cafes was 3 per cent. 20 per cent and 104 per cent. higher than in April 1974, April 1973, and April 1968, respectively. No information is available on a regional basis.
