HC Deb 30 July 1974 vol 878 cc122-3W
Mr. Woof

asked the Secretary of State for Employment what are the present average earnings of male and female workers respectively, in the Northern Region; and how these compare with the national earnings.

Mr. Booth

The latest information, with regional detail, is for October 1973, but this relates only to male manual workers. At this date, in the industries covered by the inquiry, average weekly earnings of men manual workers, aged 21 years and over, were £40.05 in the Northern Region and £40.92 in the United Kingdom. These averages can be affected by factors such as differences in the pattern of industry and may not, therefore, give a precise indication of differences in earnings for comparable work.

Estimates for both male and female workers, and covering all industries and services, are provided by the New Earnings Survey, the latest results relating to April 1973, and are given, for example, in Tables 74 and 75 of the results published in the Department of Employment Gazette for December 1973.
