asked the Secretary of State for Trade what would be the effect on the balance of payments of a total cessation of tobacco imports.

Mr. Deakins

There would be a reduction both in imports and exports; in the first half of 1974 imports of tobacco and tobacco manufactures were £83 million c.i.f. and exports £31 million f.o.b. Other less direct effects are difficult to quantify.
