HC Deb 29 July 1974 vol 878 c70W
Mr. Russell Johnston

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science how many schools are still in use in England and Wales which were built before 1875.

Mr. Armstrong

My Department does not collect regular information of this kind. A survey carried out in 1962 indicated that some 7,000 primary and 375 secondary schools in England and Wales with buildings constructed before 1875 were still in use at that time. A significant number of these have been taken out of use since then, but it is not known how many.
