HC Deb 29 July 1974 vol 878 c94W
Mr. Hooley

asked the Minister of Overseas Development what financial or scientific help is being given by Her Majesty's Government to combat onchocerciasis—river blindness—which takes a toll on health and the economy in the Sahel region of Africa.

Mr. William Price

A major international project to combat onchocerciasis in the Volta River basin of West Africa started this year. It is being carried out by the World Health Organisation and financed internationally through a special fund. Her Majesty's Government have promised to contribute up to £425,000 in 1974–75. British scientists will be actively involved in the project.
