HC Deb 29 July 1974 vol 878 cc75-6W
Mr. D. E. Thomas

asked the Secretary of State for Employment if he will publish in the OFFICIAL REPORT the average weekly earnings of male and female employees governed by the Licensed Residential Establishments and Restaurants Wages Council for each year 1964 to 1973.

Mr. Booth

The following published results of the new earnings surveys are estimates of the median gross weekly earnings of full-time manual men—aged 21 and over—and full-time manual women—aged 18 and over—within the scope of the Licensed Residential Establishments and Licensed Restaurants (GB) Wages Council. The estimates relate to employees whose pay for the survey pay period was not affected by absence and to earnings before any deduction, allowed under the wages regulation order, for meals, board and lodging provided by the employer. They exclude any tips and gratuities received by the employee and not included in the pay from the employer. Estimates for other dates are not available.

Median gross weekly earnings
Full-time men (aged 21 and over) Full-time women (aged 18 and over)
£ £
September 1968 14.70 9.00
April 1970 17.10 10.50
April 1971 18.30 11.70
April 1972 20.70 13.00
April 1973 25.00 15.20

The estimates are given to the nearest 10p and are subject to sampling errors. The median of the gross weekly earnings of a group of employees is the amount such that 50 per cent. of the employees have gross weekly earnings below the amount and the other 50 per cent. have gross weekly earnings above it.
