HC Deb 26 July 1974 vol 877 cc595-6W
Mr. Hall-Davis

asked the Secretary of State for Industry if, in order to ensure that precautions against fire are fully effective, he will give a general direction that hotels and boarding-houses should be included in the categories of telephone subscribers for whom an emergency repair service is available during holiday periods and outside the normal hours of work of the service.

Mr. Gregor Mackenzie

No. The Post Office emergency repair service is designed primarily to ensure that telephones likely to receive emergency incoming calls such as those in doctors' surgeries and in fire stations are repaired as quickly as possible. The Post Office tells me that the addition of hotels to the list of subscribers entitled to the emergency service would seriously diminish its ability to provide a satisfactory service to those already on the list.
