HC Deb 25 July 1974 vol 877 c535W
Mr. Ovenden

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science whether he will propose allowing the pupils who attain the age of 16 years during the autumn term to leave school at the end of that term provided they are to undertake a course of part-time study at technical colleges.

Mr. Armstrong

No. Pupils who attain the age of 16 from the beginning of September to the end of January are required by law to remain at school until the end of the Spring term.

Mr. Tierney

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what recent representations he has had from teachers' organisations welcoming the raising of the school leaving age to 16 years.

Mr. Armstrong

My right hon. Friend has not sought the latest views of the teachers' organisations on the raising of the school leaving age and I am aware of no such representations having been received.
