HC Deb 25 July 1974 vol 877 cc567-8W
Mr. Hayhoe

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment whether any major road works will be required in the area of the London borough of Hounslow as a result of the decision to abandon the Maplin project.

Mr. Carmichael

Whether, during the 1980s, there could be any significant developments at Heathrow additional to the (substantial expansions already planned would, as explained by my right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for Trade in his statement on 18th July, be a matter for consultation with local authorities and other bodies concerned. Those consultations would cover the question of any possible related major road works in the area of the London borough of Hounslow. An outline of longer-term development possibilities at Heathrow is given in the Department of Trade's recently published report on the review of the Maplin airport project.

Mr. Hayhoe

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment whether he will publish the results of the studies done by his Department into the likely effect upon road traffic in the areas around Heathrow as a result of the Government's decision to abandon the Maplin project.

Mr. Carmichael

Current estimates of the levels of air passenger traffic that might have to be accommodated at Heathrow by 1990 were the airport to be expanded beyond the capacity already planned are provided in the Department of Trade's recently published report on the review of the Maplin airport project. Before any decisions were taken on such possible developments there would, as explained by my right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for Trade in his statement on 18th July, be consultations with local authorities and other bodies concerned. Road traffic estimates would figure in those consultations.
