HC Deb 25 July 1974 vol 877 cc520-1W
Mr. Woof

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food if he will take steps in relation to the different commodities of surplus foodstuffs in the EEC that are imported into Great Britain, to offset the higher price food commodities to benefit the British consumer.

Mr. Bishop

The British consumer has already benefited from Community disposal measures for butter. The United Kingdom has also been able, by virtue of Community preference, to obtain other commodities, such as Community-grown cereals, at more favourable prices than third countries.

Mr. Woof

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food to what extent British consumers of imported foodstuffs are enabled to share in downward movements in world prices and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Bishop

British consumers are today in a position to benefit from downward movements in world prices on most of the main commodities except some dairy products and beef for which United Kingdom prices are currently at relatively low levels. But it is certainly our objective in renegotiation to increase the opportunity for British consumers to benefit from such downward movements.
