HC Deb 24 July 1974 vol 877 c488W
Mr. Blaker

asked the Secretary of State for Industry what is the amount to be received from the European Commission for assistance in retraining workers who have been made redundant following the rationalisation of the works of the British Steel Corporation in the Scunthorpe area.

Mr. Meacher

The European Commission has allocated £700,000, as being half the estimated gross cost to assist steel workers affected by the closure and replacement of plant at Appleby Frodingham and Redbourne, near Scunthorpe. This contribution embraces all the benefits available under the Iron and Steel Employees Readaptation Benefits Scheme; it includes provision for retraining, but there is no specific sum set aside for this purpose.
