asked the Secretary of State for Industry what progress has been made in the development of exhaust catchment devices for vehicles which will enable the lead content of petrol to be maintained at an economic level without damage to the environment.

Mr. Meacher

An extensive programme of lead filter testing has been undertaken by the Warren Spring Laboratory and the Transport and Road Research Laboratory, and the final report should be available in the autumn.
