HC Deb 24 July 1974 vol 877 c487W
Mr. Money

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs how many British subjects are currently awaiting trial or held without trial in Malawi.

Miss Joan Lestor

Our records show that there are eight people in prison in Malawi who are known to be United Kingdom citizens and who have not been tried. Two of these have been charged with offences and are awaiting trial, and six are detained under valid provisions of local law which provide for indefinite detention without charge or trial. There is one other person, believed to be in the second category, whose precise national status has not yet been established.
