HC Deb 24 July 1974 vol 877 c463W
32. Mr. Donald Stewart

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment what steps he is taking to combat the damage of pollution of the coast by Japanese seaweed; and if he has consulted his French counterpart on this matter.

Mr. Oakes

I have no evidence at present that this seaweed, which has been found only in the Portsmouth-Isle of Wight area, is causing significant damage. Developments are being closely watched, and we are awaiting a report from the local working party of interested bodies. We have had no occasion to consult our French colleagues and they have not approached us.
