HC Deb 24 July 1974 vol 877 cc508-9W
Mrs. Wise

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services how many patients are awaiting geriatric beds in Coventry and are, at present, unable to receive suitable treatment and care because no beds are available.

Dr. Owen

At 31st December 1973, 81 patients were awaiting admission to geriatric beds in Coventry. Information about the individual treatment and care which each of these patients is presently receiving through other branches of the health and social services could only be provided at disproportionate cost.

Mrs. Wise

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services whether the number of beds for geriatric patients which are available in Coventry is greater or smaller than the average available over the country as a whole (a) per head of population, and (b) per head of population aged 65 years and over.

Dr. Owen

At 31st December 1973, there were in Coventry 0.9 beds for geriatric patients per 1,000 of the population, or 8.8 beds per 1,000 population aged 65 years and over. The figures for England were 1.2 and 11.1, respectively.

Mrs. Wise

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services how many beds are available in Coventry for patients requiring geriatric care.

Dr. Owen

Three hundred beds at 30th June 1974.

Mr. David Young

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services how many non-geriatric patients are occupying geriatric beds within the Bolton Area Hospital Board.

Dr. Owen

Four in the hospitals of the Bolton Area Health Authority.
