HC Deb 23 July 1974 vol 877 c456W
Sir Nigel Fisher

asked the Minister for Overseas Development if she will consider topping up local salary scales for doctors, teachers and others in the Falkland Islands, where personnel recruited in the United Kingdom receive more than local people with the same work and qualifications.

Mrs. Hart

No. The supplementation arrangements are specifically to assist in the recruitment and retention of expatriate staff for posts in the Falkland Islands for which no suitably qualified local candidates are available. The revision of salaries for locally recruited officers is a matter for the Falkland Islands Government.

Sir Nigel Fisher

asked the Minister for Overseas Development if she will expedite the construction of an airport in the Falkland Islands.

Mrs. Hart

On 22nd May I authorised a grant of approximately £4.2 million from development aid funds for the con-structure of a permanent airfield in the Falkland Islands. The contract has been awarded, and covers a total period of 21 months. Work on the site is expected to start in October.
