HC Deb 22 July 1974 vol 877 c350W
Mr. Fernyhough

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer by how much would income tax have to be increased if the total cost of education, the fire and police services were to be paid by the Treasury.

Dr. Gilbert

If it were decided to raise additional amounts of income tax equal to that part of the cost of the services mentioned at present borne by local authorities, income tax rates would have to be increased by the following amounts: education, 4.2p; and, as I told my hon. Friend the Member for Newton (Mr. Evans) on 4th July—fire services, 0.15p; police force, 0.6p.
