asked the Secretary of State for the Environment whether, in view of public concern at the amounts of allowances being claimed by local councillors, he will review the appropriate regulations with a view to taking steps to ensuring that allowances are paid merely to compensate for earnings lost by reason of attendance at council meetings, and expenses necessarily incurred.

administrative expenses; what is the amount of the charge by the Post Office for the encashment of weekly orders; and what is the nature and cost of the services provided by other Government Departments.
