HC Deb 19 July 1974 vol 877 cc302-3W
Mr. Michael McNair-Wilson

asked the Secretary of State for Prices and Consumer Protection what compensation will be provided to shopkeepers having to change their equipment to the metric scale; and if she will make a statement.

Mr. Alan Williams

It has been the policy of all Governments since Government support for voluntary metrication was announced in 1965 that costs should lie where they fall. But expenditure incurred by a shopkeeper on the modification or replacement of equipment should be allowable against tax.
