HC Deb 19 July 1974 vol 877 cc285-6W
Mr. Money

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what representations have been made to the Malawi Government regarding the arrest, imprisonment without trial and deportation of Mrs. Susan Farrow, a British subject; and whether he will make a statement.

Mrs. Knight

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will make representations to the Government of Malawi protesting at the treatment meted out to Mrs. Susan Farrow after she criticised a speech by Dr. Banda.

Miss Joan Lestor

None. Mrs. Farrow was detained on the afternoon of 10th July, and was served with a Prohibited Immigrant Order on 11th July. She was released and left the country on 12th July. Her detention was legal in Malawi law.

As it is the right of every sovereign State to decide which non-citizens are to be permitted to live within its territory, we cannot challenge the Malawi Government's right to expel Mrs. Farrow, although we very much regret the action and the hardship suffered by her.
