Mr. Kelley

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what increase in staff at the Inland Revenue Department has been made since the introduction of value added tax.

Dr. Gilbert

VAT is administered by the Customs and Excise Department. The net increase in the staff of that Department arising from the introduction of VAT is about 6,000. The increase since the introduction of the tax is slightly under 2,000.
