Mr. D. E. Thomas

asked the Secretary of State for Employment what was the proportion of total household expenditure in the eight English standard regions devoted to rents, rates and water charges for each year 1966 to 1973; and what was the comparable figure for England and Great Britain.

The following information is from the Family Expenditure Survey. The figures are rounded and are subject to sampling variations particularly in the smaller regions.

* For households owning their dwellings or living rent free a notional rent has been calculated based upon the rateable value.
