Mr. McNamara

asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland whether he will state the number of young persons over the age of 14 and under the age of 17 years at present on remand in Northern Ireland for scheduled offences; where they are on remand; and the time they have spent on remand.

Mr. Orme

At 12th July 1974, 45 young persons were on remand for scheduled offences, but 12 of them had absconded and were still at large. Thirty-five, including the 12 still at large, were remanded to remand homes and 10 to prison. The times spent on remand are as follows:

  • 1 for 26 weeks
  • 1 for 19 weeks
  • 1 for 15 weeks
  • 4 for 14 weeks
  • 4 for 13 weeks
  • 1 for 12 weeks
  • 1 for 10 weeks
  • 2 for 8 weeks
  • 1 for 7 weeks
  • 2 for 6 weeks
  • 3 for 4 weeks
  • 3 for 3 weeks
  • 3 for 2 weeks
  • 4 for 1 weeks
  • 2 for less than 1 week

Mr. McNamara

asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland what educational and training facilities will be available for young persons aged between 14 years and 17 years remanded at the Crumlin Road Prison, Belfast, indicating the number of teachers, the range of courses and the training facilities available.

Mr. Orme

Education is provided as part of the daily programme for young persons on remand in Her Majesty's Prison, Belfast, and is related to the courses which the boys were pursuing before remand. It includes remedial teaching and also tuition for the Certificate of Secondary Education and GCE.

One teacher is presently employed; additional staff will be recruited as required.
