§ Mr. EadieThe Government have taken part in an extensive exchange of views within the Community on demand for and supply of enriched uranium leading to a resolution by the Council of the European Communities on the provision of enrichment capacity within the Community.
§ Mr. Ian Lloydasked the Secretary of State for Energy whether he is satisfied that an adequate supply of enriched uranium can be ensured for the current and proposed SGHWR nuclear electricity generating plants.
§ Mr. EadieYes. The programme of SGHWR construction recently announced by the Government represents only a marginal increment in world demand for enriched uranium.
§ Mr. Ian Lloydasked the Secretary of State for Energy what steps he has taken, in the light of the recent statement by the US Atomic Energy Commission on the curtailment of US enriched uranium exports, to substitute other supplies of enriched uranium for any that may have been curtailed as a result of this statement.
§ Mr. EadieNo action is necessary at present to substitute other supplies of enriched uranium, though the situation will be kept under review. The United Kingdom expects to look mainly to the gas centrifuge collaboration with the Netherlands and Germany to meet future requirements for enrichment.
