HC Deb 16 July 1974 vol 877 cc115-6W
Mr. Donald Stewart

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what plans he has to utilise peat as an energy and chemical resource.

Mr. William Ross

A recent examination of relative capital and operating costs by the North of Scotland Hydro-Electric Board indicated that the generation of electricity in Scotland from peat would be uneconomic. The board will, however, keep the position under review as changes in capital and fuel costs occur.

In 1969 the Highlands and Islands Development Board commissioned a study of peat as a possible source of wax, carbon or other industrial chemicals, which did not suggest a viable proposition. The board continues to receive suggestions about possible commercial uses for peat, and is currently involved in discussions on some of these.
