HC Deb 16 July 1974 vol 877 cc103-4W
Mr. John Evans

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what recent steps he has taken to renegotiate the Commonwealth Sugar Agreement.

Mr. Bishop

The Commonwealth Sugar Agreement expires at the end of 1974. So far as the developing Commonwealth exporting countries are concerned, it will be replaced by arrangements to be negotiated between these countries and the Community under the relevant provisions of the Treaty of Accession—Protocol 22 and the Joint Declaration of Intent. In addition we have made it clear that we seek continuing access to the Community for Australian sugar. Consultations with all the Governments concerned took place in London during the week beginning 1st July, the outcome of which was described in the reply given to the right hon. Member for Cambridgeshire (Mr. Pym) on 11th July.
