HC Deb 15 July 1974 vol 877 cc14-5W
55 Mr. Churchill

asked the Secretary of State for Industry if he will make a statement about the future of the Irlam steelworks and its employees.

Mr. Meacher

My right hon. and noble Friend the Minister of State has written to the hon. Member and to other hon. Members representing constituencies in the Manchester area about the closure which took place on 27th June. He also discussed it with a number of those hon. Members and with the TUC Steel Committee. The British Steel Corporation with the assistance of Government Departments has made great efforts to alleviate its effects, and the prospects of reemployment for the 2,200 employees affected are good.
