HC Deb 15 July 1974 vol 877 cc15-6W
Mr. Trotter

asked the Secretary of State for Industry on what date he or repre sentatives of his Department first discussed with representatives of the TUC the action to be taken by his Department concerning Court Line.

Mr. Benn

On 25th June 1974 after unsuccessful attempts to arrange a discussion the previous day.

Mr. Bruce-Gardyne

asked the Secretary of State for Industry whether, in view of the fact that negotiations were proceeding between Court Line Ltd. and potential purchasers for the acquisition of the shipbuilding activities of that company as going concerns, he will set out in the OFFICIAL REPORT the considerations which led him to conclude that time did not permit him to consult with the Industrial Development Advisory Board before agreeing in principle to acquire the assets of Court Shipbuilding Ltd. under the terms of Section 7 of the Industry Act, as laid down in Section 9 of that Act.

Mr. Benn

None of the negotiations in progress could have been completed in the short time available, which precluded even consultation with the Industrial Development Advisory Board.
