The "crude" balance is not a good measure of the balance of trade in goods because, inter alia, of differences in valuation.

Mr. Dykes

asked the Secretary of State for Trade on what statistical information he based his assertions made on 11th June that the United Kingdom deficit on visible trade aggregated for all other member countries of the European Economic Community is currently running at an annual rate of £1,500 million.

Mr. Deakins

The latest figures published on 11th July indicate that in the first half of 1974 the crude trade deficit, i.e. the difference between exports fob and imports cif, was running at an annual rate of £2,000 million.
