asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will give the total sums of equity capital invested by the central Government since 1970 in companies in England, Scotland and Wales, respectively.

The Question relates only to equity which is listed below. The hon. Member will appreciate that aid of various kinds, on a very substantial scale, including regional development grants, selective financial assistance under the Industry Act 1972, and regional employment premium, has been given to the regions, including Scotland and Wales.

England
