§ Mr. Ronald Atkinsasked the Secretary of State for the Environment how many houses for tenants and owner-occupiers, respectively, have been so far submitted to him by the Central Lancashire New Town Development Corporation; and if he will make a statement.
§ Mr. OakesThe previous Government approved a scheme to build 1,200 houses for sale. My right hon. Friend recently approved a scheme for 1,600 dwellings, of which at least half will be built for rent. He has also authorised the purchase of 76 flats for tenancy.
The development corporation has submitted other proposals for approximately 5,100 dwellings to be built on roughly 583W a 50–50 rented/for sale ratio. These proposals are now under consideration.
My hon. Friend will be aware that new town housing policy is at present under review. Planning applications of this kind will obviously be affected by the outcome.
§ Mr. Ronald Atkinsasked the Secretary of State for the Environment what Government assistance is given to housing and other developments in the Central Lancashire New Town area.
§ Mr. OakesI regret I cannot give a wholly satisfactory reply since various Government Departments are involved in financial assistance. This aspect is covered in general terms in a book entitled "New Towns", prepared by my Department, which I am sending my hon. Friend and placing in the Library. I would refer my hon. Friend in particular to Chapter 4. I am also writing to my hon. Friend in more detail.
