HC Deb 11 July 1974 vol 876 cc550-1W
Mr. Wakeham

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what representations he has received from the beekeepers about the harmful effects on bees of chemical sprays used on open blossom; and if he is satisfied with the present regulations in view of the losses suffered by some beekeepers.

Mr. Bishop

My right hon. Friend has received two letters about this. Farmers, contractors and beekeepers normally maintain close liaison and co-operation in applying the Agricultural Departments' detailed recommendations which are designed to give bees maximum protection that is practicable. We shall continue to publicise the necessary precautions and to encourage all concerned to observe them. In this way we may hope to reduce the risk of the kind of unfortunate local incidents which can detract from what has been achieved nationally, and by voluntary measures, to minimise spray hazards to bees.
