§ Mr. Edelmanasked the Secretary of State for Employment how many public appointments are within his gift; and what is the cost to the Treasury.
§ Mr. BoothProduction of a full list would involve a disproportionate cost to public funds. There are some 650 appointments in the gift of the Secretary of State. About 550 of these are salaried or unpaid and about 100 are fee-paid. The annual cost of salaries is of the order of £400,000 and of fees £190,000. Not all of the cost falls directly on my Department's Vote.
