HC Deb 10 July 1974 vol 876 cc522-3W
Mr. D. E. Thomas

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what was the total expenditure per household by the central Government on housing in Scotland in 1973.

Mr. William Ross

Central Government expenditure on housing in Scotland in 1972–73 was equivalent to £36 per household. This figure does not include spending by local authorities and new towns.

Mr. D. E. Thomas

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland how many new dwellings were erected per 1,000 population in Scotland in 1973.

Mr. Wiliam Ross

I would refer the hon. Member to Supplementary Table V of Housing and Construction Statistics No. 8 (4th quarter, 1973).

Mr. D. E. Thomas

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland whether he will state the number of houses in Scotland without a fixed bath; whether he will express this number as a percentage of the housing stock in Scotland; and whether he will express the average for Scotland as a percentage of the average for Great Britain.

Mr. William Ross

At the 1971 census, 204,400 households in Scotland were recorded as living in dwellings lacking a fixed bath or shower: these comprised 12 per cent. of all Scottish households or 133 per cent. of the corresponding percentage for Great Britain—9 per cent.

Mr. D. E. Thomas

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what is the average age of the housing stock in Scotland.

Mr. William Ross

An average age cannot be given with any accuracy but the estimated age distribution of Scotland's housing stock at December 1972 is published in Supplementary Table XII of Housing and Construction Statistics No. 5 (1st Quarter 1973).
