Mr. D. E. Thomas

asked the Secretary of State for Wales what was the total amount of financial assistance from central and local government sources to comprehensive schools in Wales in 1973; and whether he will express this figure on a per capita basis of pupils attending comprehensive schools.

Mr. John Morris

Central Government assistance for comprehensive schools is included in rate support grant and is not separately identified. Information about local government assistance is not available centrally, but the hon. Member may be able to obtain details from the relevant local education authorities in Wales.

Mr. D. E. Thomas

asked the Secretary of State for Wales how many local authority places there are in all the direct grant schools in Wales; how many of these are taken up; and if he will express the total amount of financial assistance from central and local government sources to direct grant schools in Wales on a per capita basis of local authority pupils attending those schools.

Mr. John Morris

The number of free places in direct grant grammar schools available to local education authorities is a matter for agreement between authorities and the governors of those schools. In January 1974 there were 637 pupils in the four direct grant schools in Wales whose fees were paid by local education authorities.

The total amount of central Government grant during the financial year 197374 was £281 per local education authority pupil in the schools.

Information is not available in my Department on whether local authorities give financial assistance to these schools.

Mr. D. E. Thomas

asked the Secretary of State for Wales whether he will state the number of schools in Wales not integrated within the local education authority system; and if he will name these schools and indicate the status of each one.

Mr. John Morris

There are in Wales 67 independent schools, two direct grant grammar schools, one direct grant technical school and one non-maintained special school which are not integrated within the maintained schools system. The schools and their status are:
