asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what is his estimate of the cost of a national referendum.

Dr. Summerskill

Assuming that the ordinary electoral machinery was used the cost would be likely to be about the same as for a General Election, which, excluding expenses in connection with the postage of candidates' addresses, amounted at the last election to aproximately £4 million.
