asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what are the number of private beds in National Health Service hospitals and the total annual payments made to the health service by private patients for such accommodation.

At 30th June, 1974, 4,574 beds were authorised for use by private patients in National Health Service hospitals in England. Income from the use of such beds for the year ended 31st March 1973, the latest for which accounts are available, was nearly £12 million.
