HC Deb 08 July 1974 vol 876 cc390-1W
Mr. Michael Morris

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services if she will set up an independent inquiry into the relative pay levels of ancillary staff, domestic, porter and catering, within the hospital service.

Dr. Owen

I would refer the hon. Member to my right hon. Friend's statement during the debate on National Health Service pay on 23rd May.—[Vol. 874, c. 690.]

Mr. William Hamilton

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services if she will make a further statement on the progress of the Halsbury inquiry into the pay and working conditions of National Health Service nurses and ancillary staff.

Dr. Owen

Lord Halsbury expects that his inquiry will report by the late summer but cannot be more precise until he has studied the evidence. He has told my right hon. Friend that he will give her a firm date at the end of this month. Should it then appear that the report will be seriously delayed she will consider asking him to make an interim recommendation.
