HC Deb 05 July 1974 vol 876 cc295-6W
Mr. Michael Latham

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science whether he will make a statement on his proposals for a certificate of extended education; and what consideration he is giving to proposals for a certificate of further education, as suggested by colleges of further education.

Mr. Prentice

Proposals for a Certificate of Extended Education examination are at present under consideration by the Schools Council. I will await a recommendation from the council before I consider whether such an examination should be established.

I am aware that several of the further education examining bodies are at present considering the introduction of new examinations for students whose needs are not met by existing examinations, and that a pilot scheme for a Certificate in Further Education is to be introduced in some areas in the coming academic year. My formal approval is not required for such schemes, but I am watching developments with interest. In particular, I would wish to encourage close co-operation in this area between all schools and further education interests.
